I am saddened today to learn of the earthly passing of one of my most influential mentors, Dr Spurgeon McCartt. Spurgeon was the Senior Pastor of First Broad St UMC who reintroduced me to the grace of Jesus Christ, welcomed my wife into membership and baptized our first born child. A man exceedingly proud of his rural heritage, the love he held for his wife and family, the service he gave to the US Navy during World War II, and his passion for his Duke Blue Devils and golf, he demonstrated a Christian life as well as anyone I ever knew. Thank you, Spurgeon, for sharing your wisdom, your open heart for all and the genuineness and candor you shared. While he was fond of reminding anyone that would listen that the past really wasn’t all that good, rest assured he was. Enjoy being in the arms of the Jesus you so deeply loved.
Dr. McCart’s first pastoral assignment was to Caryville-Fincastle in 1949-1950.
